Sandy Ball

Title: Registered Nurse

Sandy Ball, MSN, RN came to Mason as a graduate student in 2014. She began working at Student Health Services (SHS) in 2017. Sandy joined Safety, Emergency, & Enterprise Risk Management in January 2021 as a COVID Vaccine Clinic Worker while continuing to work at SHS. She left SHS August 2021 to focus on her duties as a COVID Operations RN for SEERM. In this role she acted as vaccine manager, vaccinator, and COVID tester. Sandy will join the Employee Heath and Well- Being team in Fall 2023.

Prior to joining Mason, Sandy worked as a school nurse in Virginia and in hospitals in Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Texas in various departments including coronary care, intensive care and in a Level I trauma center Emergency Department. She also held various administrative roles including Trauma Registrar and Resource Management Coordinator.

Sandy is a nursing diploma graduate. She earned her Master’s degree in Nursing with a focus in administration from George Mason University in 2017.

Andrew Beaune

Title: Lead Fire Systems Inspector

Andrew Beaune joined EHS-Fire Safety in October of 2012. Andrew comes to Mason from Simplex Grinnell where he gained experience in fire suppression and fire alarm systems. In his role at Mason as Lead Fire Systems Inspector he is responsible for all fire alarm inspections and testing he also assist in the inspection and testing of the fire suppression systems along with fire drills and fire extinguisher certifications and inspections. In his time at George Mason he has received his NICET certifications level 2 in Inspection and Testing of Water Based Fire Systems and Level 1 in Inspection and Testing Fire Alarm systems. Andrew has been trained in fire extinguisher use, blood borne pathogens, first aid, AED, CPR and lab safety. In the future he plans to further his NICET Certification.    

Danielle Fritz

Danielle Fritz began her career at George Mason University in September 2011. Her tenure in Operational Risk Management provided her the knowledge and expertise that led to her promotion to Risk Control Manager. In this role, she oversees the Incident Accident and Programs, Events, and Camps (PEC) programs, serves as the international Travel Liaison for the University Travel Advisory Committee (UTAC), and supports the administration of the Commonwealth’s Risk Management Plan and other specialty insurance programs. Her responsibilities also include managing certificates of insurance, technical oversight of risk-related databases and trainings, and analysis of claims and insurance data.

Danielle holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Akron, a Master of Science in Management from Troy State University, and earned the Associate in Risk Management (ARM) Certification in 2023.

Hayley Holmes

Title: Training and Exercise Coordinator

Hayley Holmes joined SEERM in May 2022. Her role as the Training and Exercise Coordinator entails planning and conducting various levels of emergency exercises throughout the year. These exercises help to prepare University personnel to respond during and emergency and test out the University’s emergency plans in a low stakes environment.

Previously Hayley worked as the Training and Exercise Coordinator at Northern Virginia Community College. She holds her CEM or Certified Emergency Manager certification. She graduated from James Madison University with a B.S. in Health Science and received a Master’s in Emergency Preparedness and Homeland Security from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Lisa Martinez-Cardenas

Title: Laboratory Safety Technician

Lisa Martinez Cardenas joined SEERM on March 18th of 2020 as a Laboratory Safety Technician. She is responsible for providing support to laboratories to maintain safety protocols. Her main duties involve conducting routine hazardous waste collection, supply inventories, laboratory equipment testing, and maintaining records associated with inspections and hazardous waste collection.

Before Joining SEERM, Lisa graduated in December of 2019 from George Mason University with her bachelor’s degree in chemistry, with a concentration in biochemistry. Lisa worked part-time as a laboratory assistant in the Chemistry Stockroom of the College of Science from 2018 to 2020. Additionally, Lisa worked part-time as a client and operations services team leader at the Mason Student Service Center from 2015 to 2020.

On Fall of 2023, Lisa will start the master’s degree program in Public Health in Epidemiology at George Mason University.

Randy Beahm

Title: Lead Fire Safety Inspector

Randal Beahm came to George Mason University in December of 2003 as a member of Facilities Plumbing Shop and transferred to the PM Shop in April of 2004. Randal joined EHS as a Fire Systems Inspector in March of 2009. In June of 2018 Randal was promoted to Lead Fire System Inspector. His responsibilities are to schedule, inspect and test building Fire pumps, Pre-action systems, Dry systems, Valves, Backflow preventer assemblies and Standpipes per specifications listed in National Fire Protection Standard #25, and inspection of portable fire extinguishers per specifications listed in National Fire Protection Standard #10. He also assists with Fire Alarm testing and Fire Drills as needed. Before coming to George Mason University Randal worked for Vanity Fair at a Wrangler jeans manufacturing facility.

Randal holds certifications in National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) Level II Fire Protection Engineering Technology Inspection and Testing of Water-Based Fire Suppression Systems, DPOR Certified Automatic Fire Sprinkler Inspector and is a DPOR Licensed Backflow Prevention Device Worker.

Mohamed Kamara

Title: Occupational Safety Specialist

Mohamed Kamara joined Environmental Health and Safety at George Mason University in January 2022 and currently serves as the Safety & Environmental Compliance Officer. In this role, he leads critical initiatives to ensure the safety and regulatory compliance of Facilities Management (FM) operations. His responsibilities include:

  • Preparing LOTO Equipment Specific Procedures.
  • Coordinating and scheduling safety training for FM employees.
  • Conducting Lockout Tagout (LOTO) proficiency assessments.
  • Performing fire and safety inspections across FM workshops.
  • Preparing detailed Job Safety Analyses (JSAs).
  • Overseeing Environmental Compliance efforts, including air emissions reporting, fuel certification, air permitting, Tier II reporting, trainings, and universal waste management.

Mohamed brought a wealth of experience from the Virginia Department of Corrections, where he served as an Occupational and Environmental Safety Specialist. His background reflects a strong foundation in both regulatory compliance and hands-on safety program implementation.

Mohamed holds a Master of Science in Occupational Environmental Safety and Health from the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater.

Mark Gray

Title: Fire Systems Inspector

Mark Gray came to George Mason University in September 2003 as a member of Facilities Management. Mark has served as a Fire Systems Inspector with the Environmental Health & Safety Fire Safety Team since July 2009. Mark is responsible for the inspection and testing of all sprinkler systems and fire suppression backflow preventers on all campuses as well as Masons’ regional locations. Mark also assists with Fire Extinguisher Inventory, Fire Pump and Standpipe Testing. Mark also works with fellow fire inspectors to conduct Fire safety training at the annual RA Academy.

Prior to joining George Mason Mark was a Machine Operator at a printing manufacturer in Luray, Virginia for 10 years. Mark currently holds a NICET Level II and a Backflow preventer certification in Water Based Fire Protection Systems and is DPOR certified in both areas.

Douglass O’Neill

Title: Assistant Director, Occupational Safety

Douglass O’Neill joined Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) in September 2019 as the Assistant Director of Occupational Health and Safety. In this role, he has responsibility for the Indoor Environmental Quality, Industrial Hygiene, and Occupational Safety and Health programs on all campuses. Doug leads the Mason Accident/Incident program for non-laboratory incidents.

Doug came to George Mason University with a broad background in EHS and primarily the educational environment. Most recently, he worked as Coordinator for Safety and Environmental Health within the Office of Safety and Security at Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). During his time at FCPS, Doug was involved with all Safety and Environmental Health issues, was the Chemical Hygiene Officer, was the Radiation Safety Officer and was one of the two Emergency Operations Coordinators for FCPS.

Doug’s early career included Industrial Hygiene consulting work and as an Occupational Health Compliance Officer with the Virginia Occupation Safety and Health Safety Compliance Division.

Doug has a BS in Geology from George Mason University, a MS in Systems engineering from George Washington University, a Public Health graduate certificate from Johns Hopkins University and is a Registered Environmental Health Specialist.

Christian Garcia

Title: Program Support Specialist

Christian Garcia joined Safety, Emergency, & Enterprise Risk Management (SEERM) April 2021 as a Data Quality Assurance Specialist. In this role, he was responsible for managing Mason’s COVID metric data, COVID surveillance data, along with vaccine data. In May of 2022, Christian began a new position as Program Support Specialist. In this role, he manages and provides support for SEERM’s application Environmental Health & Safety Application (EHSA) and SEERM’s online trainings in MasonLEAPS.

Prior to joining Mason, Christian worked for Contra Costa County, California. During his time in Contra Costa County, he served as an Accounting Technician for the Auditor-Controller and Employment & Human Services. Christian earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from Mason’s School of Business.
